Launched- ‘The World’s Longest Toilet Queue’, a global mobilisation that needs you to join thousands of others across the world to stand in solidarity with – and demand action for – the 2.5 billion people who are still waiting in line for their right to a safe and dignified toilet.

In the days leading up to World Water Day and on the day itself, 20-22 March 2010, we are calling on you as leaders in the fight to end the global sanitation and water crisis, to hold creative and politically engaging events that will help us create the Guinness World Record for the “World’s Longest Toilet Queue”.

By organizing queues for change in your own country and community, you can utilize this global moment to pursue your own national campaign aims, as well as help influence a global political moment just one month later, when Government ministers meet in Washington DC at the first High-Level Meeting on Sanitation and Water.

Joining the queue can be simple, fun and politically impactful. The Guide to outlines the things you will need to do, and provide creative ideas, which is attached in French and available in English on the special website www.worldtoiletqueue.org. Visit the website to join the Queue online and to find a wealth of other resources and information.

We are excited about the extremely positive response we have had about participating so far from partners north and south, and are confident that this is going to be a global success, and invite you to play your part in making it so.

Please do have a look at the website and the toolkit – the website and materials will be available in French and Spanish too in the near future – and get in touch to let us know you would like to participate, and if you have any questions or suggestions.

Ps. This is a joint collaboration between End Water Poverty, Freshwater Action Network and Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council

A new country based Water Integrity Network coalition has been formed to fight corruption in the water sector in Bangladesh.

The multi-stakeholder coalition BAWIN (Bangladesh Water Integrity Network) was founded by Transparency International- Bangladesh (TI-B), Bangladesh Water Partnership (BWP), Nagorik Udyog (Citizens’ Intitiative), and the Water Resource Planning Organisation (WARPO). It echoes WIN’s approach to bring together water sector and transparency focused professionals to promote transparency and prevent corruption in the water sector in South Asia and worldwide.

The BAWIN coalition states that a huge portion of resources available for water sector development are lost to corruption. Those involved in corrupt practice become powerful through networks ranging from top to bottom. Therefore, corruption in the water sector cannot be isolated from the overall context and must be addressed through a strategic multi-stakeholder approach including civil society, government and the private sector.

As one of its first joint activities, BAWIN supported by WIN-S, will launch a water integrity survey about the state of corruption in the Bangladeshi water sector. Further activities will include the facilitation of continuous dialogue among stakeholders on the current nature and extent of lacking transparency and accountability in the sector; sharing of anti-corruption and integrity initiatives and experiences; and linking up the water sector and anti-corruption community.

Transparency International Bangladesh will act as the convener and secretariat of the BAWIN coalition. The Water Integrity Network welcomes this new country-based initiative and provides support through its secretariat in Berlin.

If you are interested in getting involved with BAWIN, please contact one of the founding members (TI-B, BWP, WARPO).

Dear researchers, policy makers and activists,

We are excited to announce the launch of the new website for the Municipal Services Project – www.municipalservicesproject.org.

Now in its third phase, the MSP is exploring and evaluating models of service delivery that are deemed to be successful alternatives to commercialization, in an effort to understand the conditions required for their sustainability and reproducibility.

Our focus is on the water, electricity and primary health care sectors in Africa, Asia and Latin America . The project is composed of academic, labour, NGO and social movement partners from around the world. It is our hope that this website will be the site to go to for new and emerging research on alternatives to the privatization of municipal services.

The site features a diversity of publications and materials, from academic journal articles to video and audio documentaries. Our interactive map allows visitors to see what’s happening in the world of alternatives, and our events listing will keep you up to date on engaging conferences, workshops and meetings.

The website can be accessed in both English and Spanish. With its aim of Exploring Alternatives to Privatization the website goes beyond information dissemination, providing multiple avenues for visitors to contribute their own research and publications as well as engage in conversation in the Discussion Forums.

We invite you to visit the website and become a member (www.municipalservicesproject.org/user/register) to access all of the interactive features of the website, including adding your own publications and research material and creating links to your own organizations.

About the Municipal Services Project

The Municipal Service Project (MSP) is an inter-sectoral and inter-regional research project that systematically explores alternatives to the privatization and commercialization of service provision in the health, water, sanitation and electricity sectors.

Having spent the first two phases of the project (2000-2007) critiquing privatization, this phase of the project (2008-2013) will analyze service delivery models that are successful alternatives to commercialization in an effort to better understand the conditions required for their sustainability and reproducibility.

The project is funded in part by the International Development Research Council of Canada (IDRC).
